Hepatic encephalopathy is a neuropsychiatric syndrome that arises as a result of a condition known as portosystemic shunt, where abnormal connections develop between the portal vein (which carries blood from the digestive organs to the liver) and systemic circulation. One of the primary factors contributing to the development of hepatic encephalopathy is the elevated presence of ammonia in the bloodstream. This condition can be effectively managed through a combination of primary and secondary prophylaxis, which aim to reduce ammonia levels and prevent its accumulation.
